Some Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What can I do with an American studies major after graduation?

A: The major in American studies prepares graduates for careers in business, education, law, media, public affairs, and non-government organizations. In fact, many employers seek to hire employees with knowledge on American culture and society. For example, Kristal Bell ’12, an American studies major, plans to go to medical school after working for a public health organization. Joshua Throckmorton '12 is a writing associate at Swarthmore College. Asha Canady '12 won a Fulbright Scholarship to teach in Turkey. Jessica Lobl '09 was a 2009-10 Fulbright Fellow in Spain. Andrea Nieves ’07 was awarded a full scholarship to attend New York University Law School. She was also appointed a Luce Fellow, one of America’s most prestigious honors, to conduct research in Asia in 2012-13. David Reynolds ’07 was admitted to the School of Public Affairs at Columbia University.

Q: Is study abroad a requirement for the American studies major?
