Senate consists of 1 ASOC President and 13 Senators (5 Vice Presidents, 2 Class Senators of each class)
PURPOSE OF SENATE
The object and purpose of the Senate shall be to serve as a voice for the student body, support students and their activities, identify and act on student needs, approve funding for recognized clubs and organizations, provide open forums, and approve an annual budget for the Student Services.
ASOC continually strives to increase student involvement and the power of the student voice. As part of this goal, ASOC annually appoints students to serve on several campus-wide and Board of Trustees committees. These committees are the foundation of the decision-making process at Occidental College.

LIST OF COMMITTEES
Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees (BOT) meets 4 times per year as part of the decision-making process of the College. The ASOC President serves as a member of BOT. Student representatives serve on each of the committees and provide a student voice in decision-making.
Important: BOT Committee meetings tend to be held during the weekends. Applicants must be available on the BOT committee dates
Provides Trustee oversight on matters related to academic and student affairs to ensure the College’s mission and vision as determined by the Board of Trustees. The Committee is concerned with matters under the administrative leadership of the Dean of the College, Vice President for Admission and Financial Aid, Chief Information Officer, and the Dean of Students. Specifically, this committee monitors the quality of academic programs, technological resources, and athletics. This committee conducts a regular review of policies, programs, disciplinary regulations and student retention.
Recommends the complete operating budget for the following fiscal year, and reviews the previous year’s budget performance. It recommends tuition, room and board and other student fees. It advises the Board of Trustees on current and future financial needs of the college.
Oversees the care and control of grounds, buildings, and equipment of the College. It investigates and determines the need for major remodeling and for new buildings.
Recommends to the Board persons to receive honorary degrees from the College.
Supervises the ongoing advancement activities of the College, including alumni relations, development, public information, and external community relations.
Oversees the investments of the College. This includes, but is not limited to, safeguarding college securities, approving transactions, and managing real estate.
Serves as a forum for discussion of important policies and issues affecting the quality of student life at Occidental. The Committee will focus particularly on the out-of-class aspects of the Occidental experience including co-curricular, social, cultural, recreational, spiritual and residential living; and shall also review the special services available to support student success. The overall goal of the Committee is to promote a campus environment in which the students can achieve their fullest potential. Seeking 2 student representatives for this committee.
This group will consist of faculty, staff, and students. This committee will conduct ongoing review of policies, practices, procedures, and programming relevant to sexual misconduct using data on reporting and outcomes from the offices of the Title IX Coordinator, the Dean of Students office, and Campus Safety, and will make evidence-based recommendations for changes to policies and practices to the President and Vice Presidents at the end of each academic year.
The CEAC is a multi-departmental committee that advises Occidental Community members on events that are large, complex, new, involve alcohol, include off-campus guests, etc. Students and staff must attend this committee, which meets every Tuesday. We are seeking for 2 student representatives who can alternate meeting attendance every other week.
The charge of the Space Committee is as follows:
- Assess allocation and use of existing space, including appropriateness of furnishings/equipment
- Investigate impact of scheduling on space utilization of our buildings and other facilities
- Make recommendations on space allocation and renovations that are consistent with institutional goals and priorities, with special regard to environmental stewardship
- Forecast future usage trends and needs for campus and physical plant (consistent with institutional goals and priorities) on a rolling five-year basis
This Committee develops and analyzes plans designed to respond to emergencies and to evaluate their effectiveness for disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery at Occidental College. This Committee is responsible for continuously analyzing all risks which expose the College to the potential for disruption of its activities such as natural, man-made or others (e.g. pandemic, loss of research data, equipment failure).
The Dean’s Advisory Committee provides advice, counsel, and assistance to the Dean of the College and the Dean of Students. Through their involvement, committee members seek to improve the quality of services provided by the Dean of the College and Dean of Students.
- To develop and coordinate the implementation of an official sustainable food procurement policy, and a multi-year action plan for implementation of this policy
- To promote transparency and dissemination of information between Campus Dining and its constituents through the knowledge and outreach of committee members, as well as through marketing, signage, the department website and social and conventional media
- To serve as a forum for issues and ideas encompassing dining at Occidental
