Fall is in the air. Celebrate with these options for off-campus exploration.

The air is starting to get chilly; the days are getting shorter so harvesting is just around the corner! Although in this day and age we don’t have to harvest our food for winter, Southern California still has amazing opportunities to get in the dirt and harvest fresh food from farms all across the southland. There are so many things happening in Los Angeles to get into the Fall Season!

Glass bottles rock!

Many Oxy upperclassmen know about Galcos but its unknown to many underclassmen. Galcos Soda Pop Stop is an amazing shop just down York Boulevard. It’s filled with nostalgia candy from the 1950’s sodas and more.  As you walk into the store 50’s music is playing to set in the scene for time period. Boxes are piled high with a multitude of beverages for tasting.  The business began as a small family owned Italian Market over 100 years ago and slowly changed into a specialty soda shop. Galcos Soda Shop is certainly a fixture in the community and a must go to place while at Oxy.

Familiar places with hidden treasures

Hello Oxy! One night this past summer my friends and I decided to look for the so called “hidden box” in the park. We did find that box but more importantly we also found an exciting adventure activity that encompassed almost every outing we went on after that night. We found Geocaching. It’s an amazing activity that you use GPS or traditional coordinates to find a “cache” and log in your name that you found it. The caches may include knickknacks that you trade or contribute to for future geocachers to find. However the thrill is in the hunt to find the cache! Geocaches are found everywhere and for those of you studying abroad this includes you too. For those of you staying on campus geocaching makes every outing a little more exciting. You just turn on the app to see...

Welcome yourself (back) to LA with a scenic drive

Welcome back Tigers! I hope you had a lovely summer filled with many exciting adventures! For those of you who are new, I’m Emiko Schwab a sophomore and contributor to the Oxy411. I look forward to continuing to keep you up to date on all the exciting things in and around campus!  This weekend, before the stress of school starts, take a scenic drive up Mulholland Drive. Not only is this a lovely drive filled with twists and turns but it also leads to the best photo point for the Hollywood sign! It’s the perfect way to get back into the LA swing and for new First-Years or Transfers to get a taste of what the exciting City of Angeles has to offer.

Step out of the campus bubble and into a celebration

Finals are just around the corner but a culture break is always good, especially in beautiful Los Angeles! This weekend you should visit one of my favorite places in downtown Los Angeles, Olvera Street! With Cinco de Mayo happening, there will most definitely be something worth seeing!

Let go of the modern annoyances and enjoy a step back in time

The end of the school year is coming fast! Before the late night study sessions bombard you, get away from school while getting into the studying mood! I recommend the renaissance faire! It may seem a little odd at first but the ambiance is worth it. There are interesting shows, tea with the queen, Queens College, shopping and Renaissance delicacies, Huzzah!

Also if you're into steampunk or Doctor Who the culture is rising into the Renaissance Faire. It's a very exciting mixture!

Get ready for spring with a tasty treat

Happy springtime! Ruby’s Diner is one of my favorite places to hang out with friends! It’s a California original that started in Newport Beach in 1982. The Restaurant builds off of a 40’s theme with Red vinyl seats and carnations at the end of every table. There are a few in other states but Southern California is home to the only ones that are on the pier. Everything is well priced although no matter what you order, Ruby’s best attributes are hands down their shakes and fries! I personally recommend the black cherry shake. It’s delicious!

The closest one to campus is
