Food Samples and the Insider Scoop
One organization makes it easy to get to know the nooks and crannies of some of LA's most interesting neighborhoods.
Los Angeles can be a vast city. The sprawl can be intimidating to many. One organization has been working to make things a little more intimate inside the urban jungle.
Oxy student Laura Ramsay spent her summer as the Marketing Intern at LA Commons, an organization that works with local docents to provide tours of some of LA's interesting neighborhoods like Highland Park and East Hollywood. Each Trekking LA tour costs $10 but includes food tastings and the chance to get the inside scoop from a local. The Trekking LA tours run through September.
I know, September is a busy month for Oxy students. And if you're not in LA right now, you might feel like you're missing out. Don't worry. LA Commons also runs a program called Found LA which takes place in October. Last year it was a one-day event, but featured tours of thirteen different neighborhoods. While the details aren't out yet for the 2012 program, last year's event looks good, and they're promising to make this year's event better.
Whatever you do, make sure you get out and explore. Even if you can't take one of these tours, there are plenty of ways to get out into the city.
