A good meal or an evening of fun can be found all in one small section of Hollywood

Emiko at Miceli'sNow that I've joined the blog, the focus of my posts is going to be Los Angeles activities and good eats. Let the adventures begin!

Miceli’s Restaurant on Las Palmas is certainly a must eat place while you live in Los Angeles! There are now two Miceli’s, one is in Universal City and the other, original one, is in Hollywood. Since its opening in 1949 the restaurant has fed the Stars, from Julia Roberts to The Beatles. It’s the best of both the glitz of Hollywood and the home-style food and ambiance of Italy. The building is furnished with original pieces that truly get you into the Italiano mood. Right down to the red and white checkered tablecloth!

I personally...

New to campus but not Southern California, Emiko wants to give you a taste of something good.

Emiko SchwabHello! I’m Emiko Schwab a first-year at Oxy (I plan to study Biochemistry) and So-Cal Native! I’m truly excited to be joining you on an Occidental and Los Angeles adventure! So where to begin? I love the outdoors, hiking and gardening. On my free days I love to go anywhere in nature and sit-down and write. Look forward to a lot of Good Eats posts, as I'll be putting some together for you very soon.

I should also tell you that I LOVE figure skating. I’ve been skating since I was 3 1/2 and never get tired of it. My new thing in figure skating though is synchronized figure skating! I’m currently a part of California Gold, an International level team. We just came back from our International assignment in Berlin which...

Make your finals week a little less rough with massages, pizza, furry friends and more!

No one likes finals. Not even the faculty. But sadly, they seem to be as inevitable as death and taxes. So while you're plugging away trying to figure out how to appropriately use that equation or describe the interplay between individuals along the gender spectrum with various holiday catalog ads remember to take a bit of a break. Here's your guide to the many different ways to help keep yourself sane this finals week.

The Green Bean always has specialty pastries during finals week to help you cope. Be sure to check out the Green Bean Facebook page to keep an eye on which pastries are coming which days. They will also be featuring various activities throughout the week including board games, coloring, and maybe...

You've seen the fences and heard the noise, now check out what's happening inside.

The quad has become a symphony of construction sounds (although it sounds more like demolition) with both Johnson Hall and the Johnson Student Center getting some work done. After trying to crane my neck around corners and almost borrowing a pair of binoculars from the birdwatching club, I found someone willing to put on a hardhat take a camera inside Johnson hall to give us a sneak...

Whether you're new to LA or you've been a life long resident, food truck etiquette is important survival knowledge to have.

With L.A. being arguably the best city in the country to experience the wheeled wonders that are food trucks, you would think everyone would be skilled at navigating them. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Here are some tips for making your experience (and others) more enjoyable.

  1. What do they have? - Even the most established food trucks will have menus that vary based on where else they've been that day and numerous other factors. Make sure to check the menu to be sure they have what you are looking for. When checking the menu stand back a ways so others can see as well. It's super frustrating to have someone standing 1 foot in front of the sign with five people craning their necks to try to see around you. If everyone takes one big step back...

One organization makes it easy to get to know the nooks and crannies of some of LA's most interesting neighborhoods.

A stop at Libro Schmibros on Malissa's Boyle Heights tourLos Angeles can be a vast city. The sprawl can be intimidating to many. One organization has been working to make things a little more intimate inside the urban jungle.

Oxy student Laura Ramsay spent her summer as the Marketing Intern at LA Commons, an organization that works with local docents to provide tours of some of LA's interesting neighborhoods like Highland Park and East Hollywood. Each Trekking LA tour costs $10 but includes food tastings and the chance to get the inside scoop from a local. The Trekking LA tours run through September.

I know, September is a busy month for Oxy students. And if you're not in LA right now, you might...

Our fabulous food finder emilyessie hones in on some tasty Italian treats, right around the corner.

If you are craving authentic Italian food, snacks, chocolates and desserts then Eagle Rock Italian Bakery and Deli  is the place for you.  You can easily walk or drive a few minutes down Colorado Boulevard , and the Italian Bakery will be on your right hand side. Although it may be hard to spot at first don't let that deter you from making the trip! As soon as you see the Taco Bell, the Bakery is right across the street.  Not only is the food delicious but the prices are  also extremely reasonable. Two sandwiches and two pastries cost about 12 dollars total.

In it's third year on campus, SpringFest this year is shaping up to be another outstanding event! I can almost smell the food trucks and feel the bass pumping and the event is still 4 days away!

So what's happening for this year's event?Friday night will kick off around 5pm with various food trucks serving up grub on Thorne Road to the left of Thorne Patio. This year will feature some of the Oxy favorites in terms of food trucks with a few new ones thrown in to keep things interesting. There will be the Coolhaus Ice Cream Sandwiches (you may remember them from last year's Alien Ice Cream event) and Kogi Korean BBQ Truck who were both at the original SpringFest three years ago. The newcomers are the Grilled...

I'm sure you have seen it.  The stack of papers left at one of the printers in the Library from print jobs that never get picked up.

It can be annoying to have to sift through all of that to find your print job, but it's also a really big waste.  Enter - "Release to Print."

Click to view the latest stats.

A short while back Oxy decided to try a new experiment in the Academic Commons called "Release to Print."  According to the Oxy Copy Center who maintains the printers in the library this means that "in order to print or copy, you will need to swipe your ID card or enter your Oxynet credentials at the...
