5 Things I Learned Over Winter Break
Blogger: Matthew Hao
What’s up Oxy and potential Oxy fam! I’m writing this at the tail end of winter break, and it’s kind of a bittersweet feeling. I’m sad that winter break is coming to a close and that I have to start feeling bad when I watch Netflix for eight hours straight; but, I’m excited to get back to campus and see everyone again! The first semester of college is a huge adjustment, and needless to say, this winter break was much needed. I learned many things throughout, and here are just a few.
College is great. But wow, I never truly realized how much I missed my own bed until I laid on top of it for three hours straight. To be fair, there are a few things that are worse than dorm beds, and I have a mattress pad that is actually very comfortable so I’m probably not the best judge on this particular issue. Of course I missed my family and high school friends too. The ability to shower without wearing cheap rubber flip-flops I bought for a dollar was a plus as well.
I didn’t realize it until it was over, but first semester went by so fast – almost too fast. I thought the second semester of senior year went by fast, but if it is possible, this past semester went by even faster. I feel like it was just a few weeks ago that I was participating in O-Team activities, and nervously trying to make new friends. My advice to incoming freshmen, no matter where you end up, is to take advantage of everything that is offered to you because school goes by faster and faster as you get older – you probably already know that though.
Having a stateroom in the front of a cruise ship is the absolute worst – especially when you are going to Mexico. This is a little different from my last two things I’ve learned on break, but I had to learn it the hard way. My family and I get seasick pretty easily, so I don’t really know why we keep going on cruises… Anyways, there are always super fun despite feeling nauseous eighty percent of the time!! I guess the waters by Mexico are rockier than other parts of the ocean, so the ship was straight bouncing up and down and side to side. As you can imagine, trying to sleep in those conditions are close to impossible. I don’t really know if you can like request where your room is, but try to avoid the front of the ship.
This thing we call the Sun shows no mercy, to anyone. I am not really someone who gets sunburned that easily. For some reason, I decided to not wear sunscreen one time when we were outside in the blazing heat all day. My goodness do I regret that decision. Bottom line: wear sunscreen.
You don’t realize how much you miss something until it’s not there. Despite the fact that at the end of last semester I was itching to return home for the first time since August, after a few weeks I was ready to go back to Oxy. My home is great, but I never really understood how much I like being at college until I wasn’t there.
I hope you’ve enjoyed these few things I’ve learned since I’ve been on break. See Ma, I’m still learning! I can’t wait until I’m back on campus, and I hope that all you prospective students out there end up in a place that you can truly call home. As for all you Oxy students, I can’t wait to get back and see y’all!
