The Beginning of the End

Hello Tigers and Future Tigers alike!
Senior year has begun, marking the beginning of my final chapter here at Occidental.
I spent my summer here in Eagle Rock coaching a LA-area club lacrosse team. Coaching gave me some free time to explore everything Los Angeles has to offer. I spent the 4th of July watching a body building contest on Venice Beach, I hiked to the falls of Eaton Canyon and the Eagle Rock of Topanga Canyon, I watched the US Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach, and I got to see Queen Bey and her hubby Jay at the Rose Bowl.
I began the semester preparing for pre-orientation with OxyEngage. I had the wonderful opportunity to help lead 37 first-years, along with 5 other trip leaders, around Los Angeles. We were on the trip "LA Underground", where we got the chance to explore things that are frequently overlooked around the city. On the first day we did the "LA Amazing Race" in Santa Monica and viewed the filming of the "Put Your Hands Together" podcast at UCB Theater. Our second day included museum visits, a walk along the Great Wall mural, and an art class at Art Rebel. Our last day consisted of walks around China Town, the Last Bookstore, Grand Central Market, and Huntington Gardens. It was a blast getting to know a handful of the incoming first-years and a wonderful way to end my summer.
The fall has certainly already started off with a bang. This year I am a co-editor of the sports section for the Occidental Weekly, where we have already put out a first-ever Orientation issue, and are working on our first official issue of the year, which will be on newsstands next week. I have begun an internship at Philip DeFranco Inc. (part of Discovery Digital Network) writing for their website's blog. I have also begun fall ball practices with the always-awesome women's lacrosse team, and most notably, I have started working on my Senior Comprehensive Thesis in Sociology. I'm focusing my study on Greek Life at small liberal arts schools. I'll talk a little more about it in some posts later this year.
But for now, I'm just working on enjoying my last 9 months here in Eagle Rock. I have moved into a house with 5 of my closest friends, am excited to start being a Pledge Educator for Delta Omicron Tau Sorority, and am amped to mark some more hikes off of my list.
Until next time, Tigers!
