A Blog Post Between Essays on Batman and Plato
Blogger: Soraya Sebghati
It’s 10:46PM on a Wednesday night and I’m sitting on the floor of my Twin Peaks-themed dorm room, laughing with my roommate about the Internet and sharing a box of Domino’s pizza. I’ve managed to get a horrible cold in 90-degree weather and know that pizza is not the best choice at this moment, but I don’t really care. This is what I’d like to call a fairly relaxing weeknight.
I’m Soraya Sebghati and I’m a junior English and Comparative Lit major here at Oxy. I’m also the blogger/promotions person for KOXY, the school radio station, the chair of the English Department Student Committee, and a writer for Her Campus, another blog directed towards and written by womyn at various colleges. And those are just my on-campus commitments! I’m also in a band called Night Talks and we rehearse and write regularly, play shows about twice a month, and we’re currently in the studio recording our first album. Yes, you’re right, I definitely never sleep. The important thing is that I’m having fun and I definitely wouldn’t want to be doing anything else right now! I love all my classes and professors, my friends are great, and Oxy is really just the perfect place for me.
Yesterday I got the opportunity to go with my class to the Getty Villa to see a production of Aeschylus’ play, “The Persians,” and the class got to roam the museum after hours until 7PM. The production was amazing and it was really nice to get to hang out in such a beautiful place on a Wednesday night.
Earlier this month, my lovely roommate Maddy, my friend Amorette, and I took a trip to the beautiful Hollywood Forever Cemetery to see a screening of Purple Rain accompanied by a DJ set from Questlove. In case you haven’t seen me around campus, I wear enough black on a daily basis to the point that you could easily guess that I love hanging out in cemeteries.
The point here is that Oxy is great in that your professors help you do awesome things, and there’s so much to do around LA that you can really never be bored. In fact, as I write this, I’m thinking about the essay that I have due at the end of the week for my Graphic Narratives class. I should really go write that.
Thanks for reading, friends. Until next time!
