Discounted Valentine’s Day Chocolate
February 22, 2013

This year, the day after Valentine’s Day was the best day of the year. Why? Because it’s the day my sorority found out we got 24 beautiful new pledges, and because all the chocolate in heart-shaped boxes at CVS is 50% off.
I, like probably many of you, was single this Valentine’s Day. But it ended up being okay, because I spent the day with my sisters. The fourteenth happened to be the night of our Pref Dinner, which is the night that PNMs (potential new members) going through the Recruitment process select us as an organization that they are interested in, and they attend our dinner party where we get to show them who we are and why our sisterhood is amazing!
Recruitment is a weeklong process, designed to help PNMs and active members of the Greek organizations get to know each other. It’s definitely a frantic week: on top of it being the beginning of my midterms hell, I had 3-5 hours of Recruitment every night. But no matter how hard it got, it was totally worth it because in the end we got a pledge class of 24 wonderful new pledges! I can honestly say I adore each one of them, they’re so sweet and each one makes the sorority better.
Sort of like how no matter how much it sucks to have to smile while telling the guys selling flowers that you are really single, without Valentine’s Day there would be no day after Valentine’s Day, when all the good candy goes on sale.
In other news, I’m adjusting slowly to returning to school. It’s been great being back on campus—I really missed my friends, the faculty here, and being on meal plan. Rejoining Alpha has been the best way to get right back into campus life, and I am back at my great job. I’m taking three psychology classes and one art history class. The art history class is a 300-level about art of the Northern Renaissance, a subject I knew absolutely nothing about prior to taking the class. Trust Professor Frank to turn it into the most fascinating period of art there ever was. If I could only take classes from Professor Frank for the rest of my Oxy career, I would!
Even though I miss Rome a lot, I’ve definitely been keeping myself busy. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go finish this box of Russell Stover chocolates.
