Falling for Oxy
Blogger: Matt Hao
Ahh Fall. The smell of Pumpkin-Spice Lattes fill the air, scattered leaves of red, yellow, and orange cover the ground, students breaking out those North Face sweaters and Ugg boots. Wait hold up, something’s not right – oh right we’re in LA! Sorry, I got confused with my fantasies of those magical fall days. Let’s take a look at what fall is really like here at Oxy, and what makes it just as magical.
First of all, the weather during the fall months has been sunny skies and 80° to 90° weather – give or take a few rainy hours. Now, I originate from Northern California (go Giants) so this weather is not that unusual to me. However, I saw many Snapchat stories of rainy days around Oxy that were captioned with something like “Finally!!!” or “I’ve missseedd thissss”. I’m pretty sure I just took a picture of a muddy puddle and captioned it “#blest” with the praying hands emoji – I guess you can’t really miss something you never had (shout out to the drought)? During senior year back home, the weather would be low 40’s when I left for school, and by midday it was upwards of 70°. I mean really, how does one dress for that? Thankfully, those days are behind me! Waking up in the morning here (11 a.m. is morning for me), the skies are clear and the sun is out! Walking around, everyone is wearing shorts, tank tops, or flip-flops. Yeah, it may not be sweater weather quite yet, but the relaxed vibe and sunny skies cheer me up every morning! Although I consistently dream of jumping in a giant pile of leaves, this weather isn’t too shabby either.
There are so many things that make fall at Oxy great other than the weather! I am getting word that there are/were Pumpkin Spice Lattes in the Green Bean (our coffee lounge), so all you coffee lovers won’t have to miss out on that staple characteristic of fall and the start of the Holiday season. Furthermore, mid-October is Homecoming Weekend! Parents from all over come to visit their children, jump in on a few class periods, mingle with other parents, and help support the Oxy football team (along with other fall sports)! Unfortunately, the one time Mother Nature decided to make it rain happened to be right before parents weekend. Many of my fellow NorCalers’ parents either got stuck at home or had to drive for upwards of ten hours due to mudslides on the Grapevine. Thankfully for me, my parents flew in!
Looking for some entertainment in the fall? – we’ve got that too. Fallfest was a blast (I’m just guessing on that one)! Unfortunately, I had prior commitments, so I couldn’t attend Fallfest this year (insert teary eyed emoji here), but I definitely plan on going next year! As I arrived back on campus, I could hear Kehlani playing all the way from my dorm. Everybody I talked to both loved her and wished they were still at the concert, or renamed her “Baelani” – or both. Dance Production Club is also in full swing! I am participating in two dances, and it is the best decision I have made yet (everyone join!!!!). Our first performance is coming up in early December, so the dances are starting to look freaking amazing!
Needless to say, fall at Oxy is packed with many different activities! I’m assuming the rest of the seasons are too but I’m a first-year so this is the only season I’ve experienced so far. And if for some reason, you’re not really into all the aforementioned activities, there’s always schoolwork to keep you busy! If that’s not really your thing either, you can always Netflix and chill (in my case, with me, myself, and I because I’m #foreveralone – but that’s a topic of discussion for another time). Happy fall!
