Itching to get back to school!

Sixteen days until I return to Occidental. As I sit here in my bed while wearing a down coat, I yearn for the warm glow of the Los Angeles sun. Don’t get me wrong; I love Seattle’s fresh, crisp air and gray-green-blue color scheme. I’ve been waiting so long to return to this beautiful northwest city! I’m surrounded by my family, old friends, and familiar places. But nothing parallels the sense of freedom and euphoria experienced in sunny Los Angeles, and on Oxy’s beautiful campus. There are two certain times of day on campus that I’m missing most: 12:00 PM and 4:30 PM.
At noon, any day of the week, nearly everyone on campus is trying to get lunch at the Marketplace. The Quad is full of students walking every direction. The benches that line the Quad are filled with friends, and people stop to talk on the way to the Marketplace. It’s 80 degrees outside, but there’s a nice breeze and people have sat down on the lawn in front of the Cooler. As you walk in front of the Cooler, there are students who have set up tables to try and sell cupcakes, recruit volunteers for some cause, or hand out tickets to an event. And if you’re lucky, there is some sort of musical performance to entertain you as you eat your lunch outside. Just like there was when I took this video last year.
At 4:30, it’s a whole different story. The quad is usually quite empty. Maybe you’ve just woken up from a nap, so you’re already feeling really peaceful. But I’ve found that a walk through campus around this time can be the best. Most people are in class, or maybe in the library, or maybe also needed an afternoon nap… But usually I’ll take this time to go to the Marketplace to grab a snack. The Marketplace is characteristically super empty at this time too! Maybe a few stragglers here and there, but the only people to talk to are the Marketplace employees! (Which you become quite familiar with after only a few weeks.)
In conclusion, I can’t wait to get back, Oxy!
