I know that it is been a while since I have last posted on here, so let me attempt to update everyone with a few highlights of the last few months. This summer I was at Oxy participating in the 2013 Summer Affordable Housing Internship Program. I spent 10 weeks working full-time at the Southern California Association of Non-Profit Housing (SCANPH) on the SB391: California Homes & Jobs Act campaign. Prior to participating in the internship, I didn’t have an extensive knowledge about affordable housing and the desperate need for the resource not only in Los Angeles, but all across the state and even the country. SB391 would generate a new funding source that developers could tap into in order for the production of new affordable housing projects. Additionally, thousands of jobs would be sustained and created. Through my participation in the program, including the internship itself and the weekly reflection sessions with Professor Peter Dreier, I really learned a lot. Aside from working, I definitely made it out to the beach a couple times, went to Universal Studios, did a lot of shopping, and did a whole lot of eating.
Additionally, I recently found out that I was accepted to study abroad for the spring 2014 semester. Starting in January, I will be spending a couple months in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil studying Portuguese and Brazilian culture. I am excited for this experience but it is still pretty far in the future. Before I get ahead of myself, I need to get through the fall term. As always, I am definitely looking forward to another exciting year here at Oxy. Somehow I managed to get all of my classes scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is ideal for me considering I still want to be active in my extracurricular activities, still be able to give tours, and intern off-campus this semester. I definitely have a lot on my plate, but that's how I prefer it.
Honestly, it is hard to believe that half of my Oxy Experience is behind me. It seems like not too long ago I was moving into Pauley Hall for Oxy Engage. Now that I am starting my junior year and once again, have settled into my residence hall for the semester, I’m excited for all of the new students that have just arrived on campus. Living in Pauley, a themed housing option that has students of all years, one benefit is that the first years can use the upperclassmen as a resource. When I was a first year in Pauley, I definitely appreciated all of the wisdom that they shared with me, and now as an upperclassman, I am excited to share all that I have learned with the new students.
To all of the seniors who will be applying to college this year, I recommend that you stay focused. Now is the time to really narrow down the list of colleges that you will be applying to. I definitely recommend trying to visit any of the colleges and universities that you are considering. If you happen to be in the Los Angeles area, come visit Oxy! I just might be your tour guide!
Until next time...
