Learn about the dorm you may live in!
There are five freshman dorms. On upper campus there’s Stewie, Braun, and Pauley (the multicultural dorm), and on lower campus there’s Newcomb (the newest and nicest dorm) and Chilcott. But don’t worry if you’re not in Newcomb or you’re on upper campus! I live in Stewie this year, and it’s been amazing. The facilities may not be the nicest, and the couches in the common room may have a few stains, but the community is wonderful. Stewie has an almost historical reputation as being the “party dorm”. I’m not sure how it always turns out this way, but some how all of the residents of Stewie seem to bond together and push past the lack of air conditioning and the gross old bathrooms to have fun. In front of Stewie is Stewie Beach, a big beautiful grass lawn that people sunbathe on, or play Frisbee on, or do homework on… the possibilities are endless. Across from Stewie Beach is Braun, which is known for having equally bad facilities. The upside of Braun is the air conditioning (which I’m quite jealous of). Braun has a similar community to Stewie and the residents always seem to be having fun. I’ve only heard amazing things about Pauley. The residents are freshman, sophomores, juniors, and some seniors all from multicultural backgrounds. The Pauley kids are all really close and are known for having the tightest knit community on campus. As for lower campus, Chilcott and Newcomb are close to pretty much everything: the marketplace, the gym, the library, other upperclassman dorms, etc. Chilcott doesn’t have air conditioning, but the location really makes up for all of its faults (the hallways look like hallways from your high school). Newcomb is the newest residence hall. It’s carpeted and has heating and air conditioning. It’s also the largest freshman dorm. Although Newcomb may sound like the best place to live, the community of the residents seems to suffer. I think that because the rooms are so nice, people don’t hang out in the common room as much. In conclusion, dorm living is an entirely new experience, but no matter where you end up living, you will have an extraordinary amount of fun.
