The Old College Try
Blogger: Matthew Cecconi
Last week, I was asked the question, “What has been your favorite moment at Oxy?” While reflecting on the many different answers I could have given, none stuck out more to me than one from my first year. I auditioned and was given a role in the musical Hairspray. I realized something while I was explaining what a great experience being in the musical was. Almost all of my favorite activities on campus are ones I am trying for the first time at college. I think that Oxy has an encouraging student body, which is why students can try so many new opportunities. Here are three new activities I have tried at Oxy that have been extremely rewarding:
About a month before auditions for Hairspray, I was dared by a friend to audition for the Theater department's main stage musical. With no singing, dancing, or acting experience I tentatively auditioned to be in the show. I thought I had no chance of getting a part, and was completely shocked when I learned that I earned a small part as one of the “Nicest Kids in Town.” I was excited, but wholly unaware of what was going to happen next. Months later I was on stage, in full costume and make up wondering how I got there. In no way was I expecting to get involved with theater at all during college, but the opportunities at Oxy allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and try something new.
2. Marine Biology
As a Sociology major, I do not have to take any science classes at Oxy except for one lab. I decided to try Marine Biology because it seemed like it would be really fun. On top of all of the lectures and labs, we got to go down to the beach for field trips to study real life marine biology. I studied tide pools and various types of marine life when we got to take a boat ride just off the coast. One of my favorite memories was trying to return the fish we studied to the water in a way that would prevent the scavenging seagulls and pelicans from finding a quick meal.
3. Dance Production
One other way that I have tried something new is by joining Dance Production. In case you didn’t already know, Dance Pro is our biggest student run club that showcases student choreographers and student dancers in March. There are a wide variety of dances from hip hop to hula. A large majority of the students in the club had no experience in dancing before joining. We rehearsed one hour a week from September through March and then had three performances for the entire school. Joining a dance club was not something I expected to happen and I am glad that Oxy has this type of opportunity so I could try something new.
