The Science Olympiad 2011 & 2016

Everyone at Oxy — be it student, faculty, or staff — has a special connection and story tied to their Oxy experience. My particular Oxy journey started back in February 26, 2011, five years ago, when I competed in the Science Olympiad Competition hosted on Oxy’s campus.
Every year, Oxy hosts a whole bunch of elementary, middle, and high school students who are involved with Science Olympiad. Essentially, it’s a science competition with various events that test both theory and application. I remember I participated in the Egg Drop Parachute while some of my friends made a bridge out of popsicle sticks and a car with CDs as wheels. When I was in 8th grade, my science teacher (who coincidentally is an Oxy alum!) brought our Science Olympiad team to compete at Oxy. At that time, I knew nothing about Oxy. Frankly, I didn’t know anything about college! All I was thinking about was avoiding the eminent bullies I’d be fated to meet in high school; thanks popular media!
It didn’t click that I was ever at Oxy until I was a junior in high school looking at colleges. Suddenly, a rush of memories came back and I knew had to apply. Going into senior year, Oxy seemed even more fated. Two of my teachers were also Oxy alumni. I thought to myself, “Okay, the universe is trying to tell me something.” And so I had an official tour through “Explore Oxy” in November and everything just fell into place. When I was filling out my application, one of the supplemental essays asked about my past experiences at Oxy and as I was writing, I knew Oxy was the place for me.
Going back to present day, it’s a moving déjà vu moment for me to see a bunch of kids running around with their contraptions and personalized t-shirts. To think that I was one of them five years ago really puts everything into perspective. Five years later, I have the privilege to attend Oxy as an undergrad. I have the privilege to attend the same institution as my former teachers. I have the privilege to attend a school that’s exactly right for me. As fast-paced and stressful as college life can be, moments like these remind me how lucky and grateful I am to be at Oxy today.
And of course I just had to take a picture at the exact same spot…
