Spring Break in Los Angeles
Blogger: Sarah Schmitz
Hi everyone! As spring break comes to a close and I have to finally accept that my real life must resume, I wanted to reflect and recap some of the fun stuff I’ve done this past week.
This year my friends and I decided to stay in LA as opposed to going back home, as many Oxy students do. While I tragically do not have a car on campus (it’s back home in the great city of Houston) I have wonderful friends with cars who volunteered to provide transportation.
Here are a few of the things we did during spring break:
-Saw about 10 stand up comics for free at the Comedy Palace in Silverlake. The place is a tiny venue above a chinese restaurant and packed with hipsters because it’s Silverlake, but the comedians were actually really funny. And they have people you’ll recognize from tv and such perform there. (Demetri Martin!! For free!!)
-Ate good sushi on a budget at both Tenno Sushi in Old Pasadena and the Frying Fish in Lil Tokyo. The former is a regular sit down restaurant with order sheets while the latter is a conveyor belt place. Both are good and sell $2 sushi rolls.
-Drove to Santa Monica at about 4 in the morning to chill and watch the sun rise. No one’s there at that time yet a lot of lights are still on on the boardwalk. It’s pretty and also maybe a little creepy in that the time offers a unique view of Santa Monica that most people don’t see. But I recommend it.
-BBQ’d in front of Stewie and played frisbee on ‘The Beach.’ I’ve always known there were grills there (and in Sycamore Glen) but had never used them before. I want to make a point to use them more often with friends because it’s such a convenient way to just chill outside.
-Hiked up to Fiji at midnight and then went to the taco truck on York across from Super A’s for hands-down the best tacos in Eagle Rock/Highland Park. This is, in my mind, a textbook Oxy student activity. But for those who haven’t done this yet, you really have to. Especially that specific taco truck because I could go on forever about how fantastic it is.
My relaxing spring break was a genuinely great week with friends, and I actually feel pretty rested for next week. I hope I’ve given some ideas of things to do on campus and around LA!
