Time To Grow Up a Little
Blogger: Enrique Aguilar
Hey everyone! I haven’t blogged in a while, so in case you don’t remember me, my name is Enrique and I am now a sophomore at Occidental College. A pretty exciting thing that has happened since my last post is that I have declared my major. I chose (insert dramatic drum roll here) Sociology!!! Frankly, I did not expect to choose Sociology as my major because I walked into this school extremely interested in DWA (Diplomacy and World Affairs). After taking a class, I realized that it wasn’t really my thing. My family had always pressured me into thinking about majoring in Economics, so I am currently taking a 101 class. I like it so far, but it just doesn’t compare to any of the Sociology classes that I’ve taken. I appreciated their suggestions, but I ultimately couldn’t see myself majoring in anything else. For those of you first years and even sophomores that have no idea what to major in, you still have time. Remember that you need to choose something that YOU are truly passionate about and don’t be afraid to explore. Oxy has you taking different courses to fulfill core requirements for a reason.
Moving on, everything else about this semester has been going pretty well. We just had fall break two weeks ago and it was a lot of fun. A couple friends and I went to Santa Monica for a day and walked around the pier, as well as 3rd St. Promenade, and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Aside from that, I relaxed for a bit from the heavy workload this semester and prepared myself for what is yet to come. Since I do plan to study abroad next fall, I also have to look into the study abroad programs and attend some info sessions. Italy seems to be my top choice as of right now, but that could change any day. I guess you can say I change my mind a lot.
Again, time is flying by. My plans to stay here during this past summer totally failed so I want to start planning my summer in L.A. as soon as possible. Looking back a couple months ago, I can’t believe that I thought getting a job, finding an apartment, and paying for everything was so easy. Don’t judge me. I seriously thought it was easy. WHY CAN’T LIFE BE EASY? Anyways, my parents are actually on board this time so I can’t mess up again. I need to come up with a solid plan and make it happen, especially because I’ve been told to start doing internships as soon as possible. The so-called “real world” is approaching a lot faster than expected, and it’s a lot scarier than I thought. Expect the rest of my blogs to be about my journey to being a grown up. Wish me luck!
