Green Chard from South Central Farms

Campus Dining is excited to continue its partnership with South Central Farms this week with their first produce delivery, including this week's Local Highlight Green Chard. South Central Farms is an all organic farm operating out of Bakersfield, CA, a mere 100 miles from Oxy!
South Central Farm originated in 1992 when 350-poverty level families were given plots on a 14-acre parcel of land that was given to South Central LA in an attempt to revive the battered community. "The farm thrived for 14 years and became the largest community garden in the US, and was an oasis with more than 150 varieties of fruit trees, vegetables, and medicinal herbs" (SCF). However, in 2006 the land was sold to a developer and the farmers were evicted. A community member donated 85 acres of farmland in Buttonwillow, CA to the farmers, but the lack of a water source at this location meant that it was unusable for several years. In the meantime, SCF found a temporary location in Bakersfield, which has served as its home base for the last six years.
This past summer, SCF was finally able to move to their now permanent home in Buttonwillow! Due to the move, SCF was temporarily unable to provide Oxy with the usual weekly produce delivery. We are thrilled to once again be serving South Central Farms organic green chard as a part of our Meatless Mondays dinner.
