Occidental Ranks in Top 1% of College Food Services
Occidental ranks #14 in The Daily Meal's annual study of almost 2,000 campus dining facilities in colleges around the nation.
On September 19th The Daily Meal released their annual top 60 rankings of four year college food services. Some of the schools, the study notes, failed to pass even the most basic health inspection, while others excelled, with fresh, healthy food prepared with creativity. Occidental, a newcomer to the list, jumped right to the top, outranking such schools as Harvard, Stanford, the Claremont Colleges, and almost 2,000 others. The Daily Meal called Oxy's food service impressive "on all fronts."
A few of the categories the study examined included:
Health Food/Local and Sustainable: This category looked at how the food is cooked and how healthy living education is integrated into food on campus. Occidental recieved top marks, with the study noting the sheer volume of food cooked from scratch in small batches. The editors were also impressed by the fact that Occidental has exceeded the Real Food Challenge goals seven years ahead of schedule. The study noted the unique fact that Occidental students can make a huge array of custom orders to get "exactly what they're in the mood for," and have it cooked from scratch on the spot. As the study says, Oxy's food options are "nothing short of mouthwatering."
Events/Nutritional Education: In this category the study examined food related events on campus, and how they incorporated nutritional education. Occidental has also exceeded all standards in this category, with a huge variety of theme meals, ranging from the upcoming Food Justice Month Good Food Day, to Chinese New Year, to the weekly Organic Bar, to Earth Day's Low Carbon Foods meal. Some theme meals, such as Meatless Mondays, are directly focused on healthy eating. Oxy also does a good job of supporting food events not run by campus dining, such as the Oxy Iron Chef and Taste of Oxy events.
Student Feedback/Social Media: This category was dedicated to how college food services received student requests, and to the frequency and nature of communication with the campus community. Again, Oxy excels in this category, with almost daily tweets sent out to the community to highlight specialty salads, theme meals, and vegan options in the dining hall. "Oxy's Own" Campus Dining also strives to encourage constant communication between students and staff, helping to maintain a food service that meats the needs of the current students. The Daily Meal noted the "important role in shaping the dining program" that will always be played by student feedback - the study even recognized Veg Club's work in bringing more vegan options to campus.
Thanks to the hard work of dedicated staff and students, Oxy's Own Campus Dining is proving that, as The Daily Meal says, "life can be pretty delicious if you're an undergrad."
