Superior Seafood was established in 1996 by Paul Di Girolomo. After working with another seafood company for many years, Paul decided to strike out on his own. Superior Seafood began as a small company selling fresh and frozen seafood to Gelson's Supermarkets, but they rapidly grew to be the only supplier of fresh seafood for Whole Foods Southern California, Nevada, and Arizona locations. In the last few years they have continued to expand, and they now provide all seafood to Bristol Farms and Fresh & Easy as well.
In addition to grocery stores, Superior Seafood provides seafood to restaurants and food service providers like Occidental College. They are devoted to sourcing sustainable products whenever possible, and participate in the Monterey Bay Aquariam (MBA) Seafood Watch Program.
"Over the past few years, we have worked closely with the Monterey Bay Aquarium (“MBA”) to apply their Seafood Watch color coded program to the products we sell."
All of their products are color-coded to inform clients The Seafood Watch program utilizes 4 colors:
Green = Best Choice
Yellow = Good Alternative
Red = Avoid
Gray = Unranked by MBA
Campus Dining purchases several items that comply with the Best Choice and Good Alternative rankings, including shrimp, trout, swordfist, tilapia, scallops, and mussels. We hope to continue increasing the proportion of sustainable seafood we purchase in the future.
