Protecting Oxy’s students, faculty, staff and visitors is one of the College’s most important responsibilities. Emergencies are unavoidable, but they can be mitigated through thoughtful preparation, planning and timely communications.

Is an emergency happening now? Don’t hesitate: call Campus Safety at (323) 259-2599 or 911. Both are available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

To prepare for emergencies of all kinds, Occidental has developed written plans, incident response protocols and a multi-platform communications strategy to keep everyone informed about what’s happening—in a timely fashion. Training is provided to staff and campus drills are conducted on a regular basis. Occidental’s interdepartmental standing committee on emergency preparedness meets monthly with the belief that there is always more to learn.

An important part of emergency preparedness is individual readiness. Here are a few key steps you can take right now:

  • Sign up for Oxy Alert*, the College’s emergency alert system
  • Make sure your emergency contact information is up-to-date
  • Download Oxy’s LiveSafe App
  • Add the Campus Safety phone number (323-259-2599) to your phone’s contacts
  • Familiarize yourself with the resources and protocols presented on this website

*All students are automatically enrolled in the OxyAlert emergency notification system. Faculty and staff members can sign up for OxyAlert via the MyOxy portal (located in the My Gateway tab).
