Occidental College
Campus Safety
Regulations
Receipt of a parking permit does not guarantee the availability of a specific parking space on campus. Like many colleges, it is impossible to accommodate everyone's preference to park immediately adjacent to their buildings.
With the exception of large College events, such as Founders Day and Commencement, there are usually more spaces available than vehicles needing to park. On any given day you should allow ample time to find a legal parking space and walk to your building. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday mornings are especially busy times on campus. Allow yourself extra time on these days.
Parking is permissible in designated areas ONLY:
GREEN: visitor/vendor only. Enforced M-F 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Students living off campus do not qualify as visitors. A temporary permit is required to park in visitor/vendor spaces.
ORANGE: carpool only. Enforced M-F 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Vehicle must display Oxy carpool participation permit which is available at Campus Safety. Carpool Permits are renewed annually.
BLUE: disabled parking only. Enforced 24 hrs/day. Vehicle must display a special handicap placard or license plate issued by the state DMV. The City of Los Angeles DOT regularly visits our campus and cites vehicles not displaying a DMV placard.
YELLOW: service vehicle. Enforced M-F 6 a.m.-5 p.m. Can be used for short term (10 minutes or less) loading and unloading of personal vehicles. Drivers are asked to turn on the vehicle hazard lights and call Campus Safety at 323-259-2599 to advise of loading/unloading in progress.
PLAIN/NO MARKINGS: general parking. Enforced M-F 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Can be used by faculty/staff, students, or visitors. Permits are required during enforcement period.
PLAIN/DESIGNATED FACULTY/STAFF. Enforced M-F 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Staff parking permit is required during enforcement period. The lower level of the parking structure is dedicated to faculty/staff parking.
PLAIN/DESIGNATED STUDENT PARKING. Enforced M-F 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Student parking permit is required during enforcement period. The middle level of the parking structure is dedicated to student parking
RED: fire lane/emergency vehicle only. No stopping or parking at any time. The City of Los Angeles DOT regularly visits our campus and cites vehicles parked at red curbs.
Citations will be issued for improper parking. Vehicles may be parked only in designated areas; they may not be parked on lawns or landscaped areas. The absence of posted signs, or vandalized signs, does not constitute a valid excuse for parking in any restricted space or zone.
Traffic Regulations
All persons operating a vehicle on the campus are required to comply with the Occidental College parking and traffic regulations and the California Vehicle Code; violators will be cited. All persons are required to observe the general 15 mph speed limit and all regulatory signs, postings, and instructions of Campus Safety officers as well as local law enforcement officers or other traffic control persons when present. Vehicles may only be driven on approved streets and roads.
In addition, because of the concern for safety and liability issues, the riding of skateboards, rollerblades, skates, and other devices not considered to be vehicles according to Section 670 of the California Vehicle Code is prohibited anywhere on campus. Failure to comply will result in citations, fines, and confiscation of the device.
Abandoned or Disabled Vehicles
Vehicles determined to be abandoned on campus will be removed at the owner's expense after 10 days. Except under special circumstances, and only with prior knowledge of Campus Safety, repairs that would take longer than 24 hours to complete are not to be initiated on campus. Parts and fluids must be disposed of in accordance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations. If you have questions about hazardous materials disposal, call the College environmental health and safety manager at 323-259-2933. Battery jump-starts are available through the Campus Safety department service line, 323-259-2599.
