"Getting to the Corps" Introduces Students to Gap Year Opportunities
Every year, more and more students are interested in pursuing a fulfilling gap-year experience after graduation.
At the “Getting to the Corps” event on Monday, October 7, 70 students turned up to learn about opportunities in service, education, health, and activism. Recruiters and former participants from City Year, the Lutheran Volunteer Corps, Teach for China, HealthCorps, Teach for America, and JusticeCorps were in attendance to speak directly to students about their organizations. Our guests first answered questions about their organizations’ missions and unique opportunities, including international travel, post-program career paths, and other perks like loan deferment and educational stipends. Then, in a “speed networking” round, students were given the opportunity to speak directly with the representatives from three organizations of their choice for 20 minutes each.
Every guest had something exciting to impart to students. Lucas Meyerson, a past Teach for China fellow, presented on the difficulty of getting to college in China, and the role of Teach for China in intervening in this problem. Kimberly Vawter, a past corps member with Teach for America (currently an assistant principal at Valor Academy), invited all Oxy students to visit a TFA classroom. Bert Rivera reminded us of the national dropout crisis here in the States, and the important work City Year is doing in education. Tori Carroll from Lutheran Volunteer Corps explained how she gave up her 3 figure salary to live on $100 a month to serve with this inspiring organization. Elsa Greno ’01 spoke on how HealthCorps helped her obtain her current position as a social worker at Altamed. Mae Jacobe emphasized JusticeCorps members’ exposure to real world experience within the judicial system.
The event was incredibly engaging, and students walked away with new ideas about opportunities in the post-Oxy world.
