Oxy at Fullbridge
Five Oxy students and two alumni take on business and entrepreneurship in Boston
In June 2013, five Oxy students and two newly minted 2013 grads were funded by the Office of the President and the generous donations of Trustees and alumni to partake in The Fullbridge Program. Fullbridge bridges the gap between undergraduate education and careers in finance, business and entrepreneurship through its intensified learning program. Fullbridge is like smashing the first year of business school into four weeks. Participants complete over 100 exercises and simulations to gain proficiencies in: business research; analysis; financial analysis; valuation; project and time management; creative problem solving; working in teams; and effective oral and written communication. The students submitted reflective essays, journals, and thank you letters to their donors as well as went through a post-program luncheon to share their experiences.
Fullbridge participants raved about the support and challenges provided by the program. Sid Saravat ’15, who applied for Fullbridge hoping to focus his business career goals, claims that the program had a huge impact on his future. “The Fullbridge program is designed and run by experienced business professionals who embody the skills and talent that I hope to have one day,” says Sid, who now feels much more prepared by the Fullbridge curriculum for the post-graduate business world. He enthuses, “I can finally understand what Bloomberg analysts are saying when describing a stock!”
Lizbet Marcias, class of 2015, says that “The Fullbridge Program was an amazing opportunity to build a strong network and to continue to develop a combination of hard and soft skills that will be a great asset for my education at Oxy and beyond,” Lizbet aims to open a small business in the future, and felt fulfilled and challenged by the comprehensive entrepreneur track project that taught idea creation, business modeling, and finance.
Coaches from top-tier MBA programs are hired to mentor the students throughout the experience. Lizbet was mentored by a Harvard Business School student, and had one-on-one conversations with important business leaders, including Peter Olson, the former CEO of Random House publishing. Shreya Bhaskaran, another participant from the class of 2015, describes Fullbridge as “the experience of a lifetime,” saying that “it was really helpful to get our specific questions answered and meet different professionals from various industries.”
Brett Schraeder and Valerie Savior visited Oxy participants in Boston and observed the program. “Throughout the Fullbridge experience, I felt very supported by the Career Development Center,” says Lizbet, “I felt that they truly cared about my experiences and that they were available whenever I needed them.”
Oxy’s participation in The Fullbridge Program this year was just one way we hope to encourage leadership among our students and the CDC continues to vet new programs and opportunities for students to expand upon their education and prepare for their future careers.
