Tiger Pride: Philippe Auvaro P'15
"What matters is the balance between what one wants to do absolutely and where one has flexibility."
I am a French national living in Japan and working for a pharmaceutical company there. I graduated a French business school equivalent to BA in Trade & Finance back in 1987, which I completed by attending the Master of Art in Economics course at Sophia University in Tokyo. I always felt a strong attraction for Asia, and particularly Japan, for its literature and cinema, so I naturally followed this path and tried to start my working experience in Tokyo.
If I include internships, I have now been working in the pharmaceutical industry for 22 years. My first encounter with this industry was a mere coincidence, just an opportunity to stay in Japan with a job offering possibilities of self-development. I had in mind to join the banking industry but destiny went otherwise; it was probably more important for me to stay in Japan regardless of the type of industry I would join. I was also probably naive to believe it would be easy to move out later. I think that what matters is the balance between what one wants to do absolutely and where one has flexibility.
Today, I am in charge of the support functions for the commercial organization of this pharmaceutical company in Japan, a very sizeable foreign affiliate in Japan, ranking among the 10 largest in the market, domestic and foreign companies included. What I like most is to live and work in a multicultural environment, and to drive innovation in the methods and in the business itself. Digital marketing is the domain I am presently embracing with the most energy and motivation.
I do not think that pride is my leading feeling. I rather feel very happy, to see my son evolving in contact with a vibrant community, and for myself, even partially, despite the distance, to be part of this community as well. I would like to help any motivated Oxy student with a keen interest in Japan to find internship projects connected with their projects.
