Tiger Pride: Dr. Helen Healy P' 15

March 19, 2013

"I would like to connect any Oxy student interesting in pursuing a career in naturopathic medicine with a naturopathic doctor who lives in their home state."

I went to Vassar College and earned a BA in BioPsychology. With my degree, I worked at NIH in the Laboratory of Sensorimotor Research for two years. Out of College, I thought I would like being a researcher, but I found that I really wanted to interact with people one-on-one, and not be so removed from them. I also had a hard time seeing myself advising people to take drugs with so many side effects, when I felt that many answers were to be found in nature and in changing one's lifestyle.  Thus, I applied and was admitted to the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM). I earned my ND degree in 1983 and have been a practicing naturopathic physician ever since.

Now, I work in a small clinic as a naturopathic doctor in St. Paul, MN. I treat people with many health problems (arthritis, infertility, cancer, etc.) using diet, nutritional supplements, herbs, homeopathy, and counseling. On the political front, I have worked with state legislators and regulating bodies to change the laws in Minnesota to allow for more holistic practices to benefit the state's people. I also lecture in the community on a variety of topics. I would like to connect any Oxy student interesting in pursuing a career in naturopathic medicine with a naturopathic doctor who lives in their home state, or with NDs in the Los Angeles/Pasadena area. I am willing to discuss naturopathic medical school training, the full scope of practice of today's NDs, and what the political climate is for someone not practicing conventional medicine in the US.

Dr. Healy’s advice to Oxy students: If you find that your first job out of college is not what you thought it would be, don't be afraid to move on. Follow your instincts and listen to the deeper voice inside of you, which will tend to make you happier in the long run.
