Where can I park on campus?

Limited on-campus parking is available for overnight guests via permit; please obtain a permit from your program staff at check-in. Unless otherwise directed by your program staff, day guests may park in the Visitor and Admission Parking lot (#43 on the map). Guests may also use free public street parking on and around Campus Road.

 

What should I bring to campus?

Please do pack these items:

  • Toiletries and personal care items
  • Comfortable clothes for warm weather
  • Sweater or jacket for evenings or air conditioning
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Clothes hangers
  • Money for laundry, souvenirs, and incidental expenses
  • If you have room in your luggage... your favorite pillow and a beach towel 

Please do not bring these items:

  • Candles, incense, or anything with an open flame
  • Appliances with heating elements: Hot plates, coffee pots, toaster ovens, space heaters, air conditioners, halogen lamps, or anything that uses over 800 watts of electricity (hair dryers are okay)
  • Animals (guide dogs are permitted)
  • Skateboards, roller skates, rollerblades, scooters
  • Helium balloons
  • Valuables

 

What will my dorm room be like?

Each overnight guest will have the following:

  • Bed (twin extra-long)
  • Desk and chair
  • Dresser

Your room will have a microfridge (mini microwave and fridge combo). Please note that there is a $350 cleaning fee if the microfridge is not clean at checkout.

Most programs include linens. Check with your program organizer to see if linens (pillow, sheets, towels) will be provided for your group.

Will staff clean my room?

Staff will clean your room prior to check-in, but you are responsible for keeping your room tidy during your stay. Please use trash cans in dorm lounges and restrooms. Shared spaces, such as lounges and restrooms, are cleaned every weekday.

 

Are there phones in the dorms?

Guest rooms do not have phones, but you will find telephones in the lounge or entry areas of all dorms. Phones offer free on-campus dialing (4-digit extension). Most accept incoming calls from any number. In order to make calls off campus, a calling card or credit card is required. You can find payphones here:

  • Inside Booth Hall, lower level
  • Inside Weingart Hall
  • Inside Keck Theatre
  • Outside Norris Hall of Chemistry, near Mosher 1 Auditorium
  • Outside Campus Safety office

 

Where are laundry facilities?

Each residence hall has a laundry room. The cost is $1 per wash and $1 per dry. Washers and dryers are operated via vending card; you may purchase a vending card at the Occidental College Card Office. The Card Office is located on the 2nd floor of the Johnson Student Center, off the Branca Patio. Summer hours for the Card Office:

Monday - Thursday, 8 AM - 6 PM
Friday - Saturday, 8 AM - 4 PM
Sunday, 12 PM - 5 PM

 

Where is your office located?

The Conference Services office is located in the Johnson Student Center. We are on the 1st floor, just downstairs from the Marketplace dining facility. Our office is open weekdays from 7 AM - 7:30 PM, and weekends from 10 AM - 7:30 PM You may also reach us at conference@oxy.edu or (323) 259-2795.

 

Where do I eat meals on campus?

Regular meal service takes place in the Marketplace dining facility, located on the 2nd floor of the Johnson Student Center.

  • You may pay cash for meals, or use your meal card.
  • Marketplace meal service is "all-you-care-to-eat."
  • No food or equipment may be removed from the dining room (there is no "to go" option).
  • Sorry, non-paying guests may not join other diners in the Marketplace.

 

Where can I purchase snacks and supplies?

The Occidental College Bookstore sells office supplies, books, magazines, snacks, clothing and toiletries.
Location: 1st of Johnson Student Center.
Summer hours: Weekdays only, 10 AM - 4:30 PM
Accepts: Cash, credit card, check

The Green Bean Coffee Lounge offers a large selection of coffee drinks and other beverages, sandwiches, salads, ice cream, cookies, and other snacks.
Location: 2nd floor of Johnson Student Center, off Branca Patio.
Summer hours: Weekdays only, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM
Accepts: Cash

 

Where can I find a vending machine?

Coin operated vending machines are located outside the main entrance of the following buildings:

  • Library
  • Norris Hall of Science / Mosher 1 auditorium
  • Braun Hall
  • Chilcott Hall

 

Is there an ATM on campus?

An ATM is located on the 1st floor of Johnson Student Center, near the Conference Services office and the Postal Operations Center. Please note that the ATM is not accessible when the building is locked at night.

 

Where can I find a public telephone?

Overnight guests may use telephones located in the lounge area of each residence hall. Phones have free on-campus dialing (4-digit extension). Most accept incoming calls from any number. Use a calling card or credit card to make outside calls. You can find payphones here:

Where can guests send / pick up mail?

Guests can send or pick up mail at the Postal Operations Center (POC), on the 1st floor of the Johnson Student Center, near the Conference Services office. The POC also offers UPS and FedEx services. Open weekdays from 10 AM - 4 PM. Incoming mail must be addressed as follows:

Is internet access available on campus?

Yes, all residence halls on campus are equipped with wireless internet access. Please get in touch with the Conference Services office for access information.

 

Can I access a gym or recreational facilities on campus?

Group access to athletic facilities is provided by contract. Individuals age 18 and older may access College athletic facilities via community pass. Passes may be purchased for the day, week, month, or full summer season. Facilities include pool, fitness room, track, and other spaces pending scheduling. Contact the Conference Services office for more information.

 

Where can I report / retrieve lost items?

Contact the Conference Cervices office first, as found items are often turned in to us during summer. The Occidental College lost-and-found is managed by Campus Safety at (323) 259-2599.

 

Is smoking permitted on campus?

Smoking is prohibited in all campus buildings and patios. Smoking is permitted in exterior areas when 30 feet from buildings.

 

What is the alcohol policy for campus guests?

Guests age 21 and older may consume alcohol at College bartender-served events or in the privacy of your own sleeping room, only. Outside of College bartender-staffed events, alcohol is prohibited in common campus areas including residence hall lounges, meeting rooms and outdoor areas. Please contact the Conference Services office for more information.

How do I contact Oxy in the event of a regional emergency?

In the event of a power outage, a dedicated emergency generator will keep College servers and telephones running. News bulletins will be posted on the front page of the College website and at the main campus phone number: 323-259-2500. Should local phone circuits become jammed or otherwise unavailable, you may call our out-of-state emergency hotline for updates: 1-866-961-3300.

 

I locked my key in my room. What should I do?

Please contact your program staff for instructions. Lockout assistance is available 24/7.

 

I lost my key / meal card. What should I do?

Please call or stop by the Conference Services office; we are happy to assist you.
