Culture of Care

Occidental College cares about students who are going through a difficult time. Don't hesitate to reach out to a faculty member, staff member, or administrator for support.

The "Culture of Care" is an initiative developed by the Dean of Student's Office that embraces the College's mission to maximize the potential fulfillment of all members of the community. Comprised of administrators, faculty, staff members and resident advisors, the "Culture of Care" is a supportive network that identifies and assists students who struggle to cope with the complex challenges of college life.

The small school environment allows for natural interactions to occur as students, faculty, and staff members regularly cross paths. These daily connections along with the close relationships with college mentors allow the Oxy community to implement the "Culture of Care." This concept is a philosophy in which College employees in any department on campus are encouraged to look out for students who may be in need of additional support. A caring Oxy community member will intentionally reach out and appropriately assist students who may be coping with a personal challenge. This aid ranges from simply listening to the student in need to connecting the individual to important campus resources, such as the Dean of Students Office.

Administrators in the Dean of Students Office are trained professionals with experience in assisting students who are going through a difficult time. Students in need can schedule a meeting with staff members by calling (323) 259-2969 or visiting the Office in the Arthur G. Coons building, room 111. Individuals within and connected to the Occidental community who have concerns about students can also contact the Office to discuss their interactions or receive consultation on how to address a situation when appropriate. These administrators will make every effort to keep these conversations private; however, they cannot guarantee confidentiality, specifically in emergency situations.

An essential aspect of the "Culture of Care" is the many offices on campus with important services for all students. Below are links to some of the key departments at Occidental College that offer assistance with students' personal lives. Please remember, in emergency situations, always call 911, or from a campus phone dial 9-911.
