Waiver & Enrollment FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
I’m experiencing issues with my user account.
Some issues can be addressed immediately by Gallagher. Contact their support team at 800-396-5977 or from their website.
How do I go about enrolling in the Oxy plan?
Log in to the Gallagher site and select the "waive/enroll" tab. From their, you can opt in to the Oxy plan. By not waiving the Oxy plan, you will be automatically enrolled after September 1, 2014.
I’m unable to waive the plan because my deductible isn’t sufficient, but I’m concerned about the financial burden of the Oxy plan. What can I do?
There may be some flexibility in your family or individual plan. We suggest that you contact your insurance provider and look into options, such as reducing your deductible. An Emmons Student Wellness Center staff, available at 323-259-2657, can walk you through your options. Students experiencing financial hardship can apply for the Occidental Student Health Insurance Plan(OSHIP) grant.
I have an out of state Kaiser plan, and my student has a visitor's pass to use Kaiser facilities in Southern California. How do I go about waiving the Oxy plan?
We apologize for any confusion you have experienced. Our broker, Arther J. Gallagher, has changed their waiver process to accommodate visitor member numbers. Your plan will be reviewed once you upload the visitor's number to the Gallagher.
I attempted to waive the plan and was denied because my deductible is too high. Can I bypass the deductible requirement by providing evidence of a Health Savings Account (HSA)?
No. Occidental College will not accept HSA’s to offset a deductible above $3000. We suggest that you work with your insurance company to lower your individual deductible.
I’m unable to waive because my plan will not cover providers in the Los Angeles area? What can I do?
Unless you can find a plan that will be comparable to the Oxy plan that has local providers, you will need to enroll in the Oxy student plan so that you can access behavioral and medical care while attending Oxy.
I am a student athlete participating in intercollegiate sports and I would like to waive the plan. Is there anything I should consider?
Yes. The Oxy plan will provide coverage for intercollegiate/varsity sports injuries up to $4,000 per injury. Additionally, all varsity athletes are automatically covered under the Athletics Department Sports Excess Plan, which has a $4000 deductible. An injury exceeding $4000 will be covered by the Sports Excess Plan only after all other valid and collectible insurances (e.g. Oxy plan and/or parental insurance) have been exhausted. For those students who have the Oxy plan and participate in club and intramural sports (non-varsity), the Oxy plan does not have limitations regarding injuries from sports activities. Either way, if you pass the waiver process and will only have your own or family health insurance plan, we suggest that you review your plan’s deductible, co-payments, and in-network vs out-of-network coverage differences so that you are aware of potential out-of-pocket costs. And for varsity or intercollegiate athletes, you will want to take into account whether or not your policy has any sports-related restrictions that may result in out-of-pocket expenses until you meet the $4,000 requirement of the Excess Plan. For more information regarding intercollegiate athlete insurance, please visit http://www.oxyathletics.com/TrainingRoom/2014-15/insurance.
If I waive the Oxy plan, can I still come to Emmons Student Wellness Center for care?
Yes, but in general, you may find that the Oxy student plan will allow you to experience a more comprehensive package of Emmons’ medical services, along with a more streamlined and efficient coordination with off campus providers within the student health plan network.
What sort of costs can I anticipate for services at Emmons if I waive the Oxy plan?
In addition to charging a small co pay for illness related visits, Emmons will bill your insurance for the visit, any lab work, or refilled prescriptions. Emmons will likely bill the balance of your services not covered by your plan to your student account. Given that Emmons is only considered an in network provider for United Healthcare, we suggest you look into your plan’s reimbursement rates for out of network providers. It is important to note that Emmons bills at or below market rates for all services.
If I’m on Medicaid, can I waive the Oxy coverage?
If you are a resident of the state of California, and your insurance is provided by Medi-Cal, which is the name for California’s Medicaid program, you may be able to waive the Oxy insurance, as long as your Medi-Cal plan allows you to see providers in the Greater Los Angeles area. Students with Medicaid whose permanent home is outside of California cannot waive the Oxy student health insurance plan, as their Medicaid plan will not cover them in California.
Can I waive the Oxy plan for just one of the two semesters in a given year?
If you are a student who is enrolled for the entire academic year, your insurance status with Occidental lasts throughout the year. If you enroll in the Oxy plan, you will be covered from August 1st 2014 to July 30th, 2015, and you cannot disenroll from the plan following the deadline to waive. The same is true if you successfully waive the Oxy plan. In the event that you lose your family plan, you may enroll in the Oxy plan. Please note that you will have to pay the full premium, as the plan will not be pro-rated from the date you enroll.

- Go to www.Gallagherstudent/com/Oxy
