Occidental Writers Workshop
A more informal, but regular way to work on one’s own creative projects is through the monthly workshop offered by Valerie Savior.
Students meet regularly to discuss their work and to critique the work of others in the group. Valerie Savior received her MFA in poetry from The University of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop.
Weekly Workshops
OWW hosts peer editing workshops twice a week. Students should bring 6-8 copies of their work. We typically work on 2-3 pieces in an hour-long workshop. Each workshop concludes with a short facilitated free-write exercise. These workshops depend on the participation of a group, so students should be encouraged to attend whether or not they have a new piece to bring that week. Weekly Workshops are open to all genres, experience levels, and any student on campus.
Events
OWW typically hosts 2-3 events each semester, which are open to the public and a great way to meet other writers. These events aim to encourage an active creative community and also to share our creative work with the larger campus. Event descriptions and dates can be found at the “Events Calendar” on this website.
