Talking About Teaching
I’m pleased to announce the final Talking about Teaching lunch of the semester—on writing strong and effective letters of recommendation.
If you are interested in attending please RSVP to me by this Friday, Nov 2nd at 5pm.
We want to help our students succeed when applying to fellowships and awards, graduate and professional programs, employers and internship advisers, etc., but are we writing the most effective letters? At this Talking about Teaching lunch, staff from the Career Development Center, the Office of Fellowships, Pre-Health and Pre-Law advising, and the International Programs Office will inform us what their audiences/selection committees are looking for in letters and they will offer advice on how to write effective letters of recommendation that are appropriately tailored (showing us some strong examples).Panelists: Sue Pramov, Angela Wood, Valerie Savior, Robin Craggs

The Personal Side of Personnel Economics - Kathryn Shaw '76
The Economics Department Presents...
Prof. Shaw earned a PhD in economics from Harvard in 1981 and has a reputation as one of the superstars in the world of personnel economics and human resource economics. She currently is the Ernest C. Arbuckle Professor of Economics at Stanford's famed MBA program, where she is the director of their summer institute for general management and is a GSB trust faculty fellow. She has published widely, most recently on managing talent in high performance organizations, and has served on the President's Council of Economic Advisers. She's going to aim her remarks at you and your career, so be sure to attend!

Systems of Life: Economies, Politics, and the Biological Sciences 1750-1850
This conference will explore the intellectual history of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries through the lense of conceptual innovation in the fields of politics, economics, and biology.
It will focus in particular on the significance of the concept of "the system" - as well as its counterpart in the form of the nonsystematic - in the context of a diverse range of topics that include philosophy, political economy, colonialism, slavery, poetry, and the aesthetics of science.
There will be an opening reception at Oxy. All members of the Oxy community are welcome. Saturday's sessions will also be held at Oxy and are free to the Oxy community.
