Mary Johnson on Negative Commands in Argentinian Spanish
The Department of Spanish and French invites the college community to attend a talk by Professor Mary C. Johnson of Ohio State University Department of Spanish and Portuguese, a Spanish Linguistics Search Candidate. Her talk is entitled "Voseo and Tueto: An Alternation Between Two Negative Commands in Argentinian Spanish."
This talk presents the alternation between two negative commands used in Argentinian Spanish. I use experimental methods to analyze the meaning difference found in these commands, and how this meaning is conveyed. My results indicate that the voseo form conveys information about what the speaker believes to be true of the addressee’s intensions, while the tuteoform is neutral in this regard.
