Talking About Teaching - Together but Still Unequal

Together but Still Unequal – Understanding Educational Inequality in Well Resourced Institutions

This talk by Dr. R. L’Heureux Lewis-McCoy (The City College of New York–CUNY) will examine the ways that racial and class inequalities are perniciously transmitted in contemporary educational settings. While a great deal of research and analysis has framed educational inequality as based on gross differences in resources between cities and suburbs, this is not the full story. In a growing number of suburban schools districts and institutions of higher education students from diverse backgrounds share classrooms, teachers, and educational resources. How then, in these environments, does inequality emerge and persist? Drawing from original qualitative research at the K-12 level as well as analysis of contemporary higher education correlates, Dr. Lewis-McCoy will interrogate the puzzle of inequality in well resourced settings.  Specifically, he will identify some of the mechanisms by which resources become triaged between students.  Finally, he will suggest classroom and campus strategies for increasing equality.  The CTE will sponsor a reception following the talk in which faculty may mingle Dr. Lewis-McCoy and each other to continue the conversation.

Reception Following.

Mark Amengual on Variation Within Bilingual Communities

The Spanish Department invites the College Community to attend a research talk by Professor Mark Amengual of the University of Texas at Austin. He is a Spanish Linguistics Search Candidate and his talk is entitled "Variation Within Bilingual Communities: Motivating Differences at the Individual and Dialectical Levels."

Previous work has suggested that SPanish-Catalan bilinguals in Barcelona have difficulties in perceiving and producing the Catlan-specific mid-vowel contrast in spite of early and extensive exposure to and everyday use of Catalan. The present project examines the production and perception of the Catalan mid-vowel contrasts by 80 early Spanish-Catalan bilinguals in Majorca. Production and perception data were collected in a picture-naming task, an identification task, AD discrimination task, and lexical decision task, showing that these bilinguals do product robust mid-vowel contrasts and perceive both phonetic categories despite the open vowels being unique to Catalan. The results differ from previous studies in Barcelona supporting an interaction between the phonological and lexical levels across the two languages of a bilingual individual, and highlight the importance of considering the sociolinguistic context (input, prestige, local identity) when describing the phonetic abilities of bilingual individuals.

Kondracke on Kemp

Journalist, political commentator, and Kemp biographer Morton Kondracke will speak on “Jack Kemp and the Future of the Republican Party” as Occidental College’s first Kemp Scholar.

Info

  • Time: 2:00 AM - 3:00 AM
  • Sponsor:

Appointed as the first Jack Kemp Chair in Political Economy at the Library of Congress in 2011, Kondracke is writing a biography of Jack Kemp ’57, the former AFL quarterback-turned-statesman who became one of the leading architects of the modern Republican party.

Kondracke spent almost half of his professional career as executive editor of Roll Call, the Capitol Hill newspaper. Previously, he was a senior editor at The New Republic, Washington bureau chief of Newsweek, White House correspondent for the Chicago Sun-Times and a Wall Street Journal columnist. He was an original panelist on "The McLaughlin Group" and served as a Fox News commentator for 16 years.

“Mort is the ideal candidate to serve as Occidental’s first Kemp Scholar,” said Occidental President Jonathan Veitch. “As Jack’s official biographer and as one of the country’s leading conservative commentators, he will set a high standard for future scholars as we work to bring a full range of political opinion to campus.”
