Do bring writing - two illustrative pages and copies of those pages.  Do bring enthusiasm for listening and reading others' work, too.

We will meet in Swan Seminar Room 117. I am told that the best way to find it is to go through the Swan doors which open on the quad. I suspect the room is very near where we met last semester...so use your imagination and look around for it!  I will keep an eye out.

  • Karen King on "Was Jesus Married?"

Karen King on "Was Jesus Married?"

The Religious Studies Dept. at Occidental College is pleased to announce a talk by Dr. Karen L. King entitled "Was Jesus Married? Early Christian Controversies of Marriage, Celibacy, and Salvation."

Info

  • Time: 12:30 AM - 12:30 AM
  • Sponsor: , ,

The most reliable sources for reconstructing the life of the historical Jesus are entirely silent on the question of whether he was married. The earliest literature, however, shows that from the beginning his followers were vociferously debating whether life in Christ meant it was better—or even required—to give up marriage and sexual relations altogether, or whether marriage was ordained by God—and even necessary for salvation. The lecture will bring into the discussion recently discovered ancient Christian writings from Egypt, and consider what was at stake in these debates for Christian teaching about sexuality and desire.

Karen King is the Hollis Professor of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School. She is well-known for her contribution to the scholarship of early Christian history and literature. Her books include The Secret Revelation of John, The Gospel of Mary of Magdala: Jesus and the First Woman Apostle, What Is Gnosticism?, Reading Judas: The Gospel of Judas and the Shaping of Christianity with Elaine Pagels); and Revelation of the Unknowable God. Other publications include Images of the Feminine in Gnosticism (ed.) and Women and Goddess Traditions in Antiquity and Today (ed.).

Arely Zimmerman on Immigrant Youth Activism

The Politics Department invites the college community to attend a teaching demo by Politics Search candidate Dr. Arely Zimmerman, University of Southern California. The demo is entitled "Immigrant Youth Activism and the Future of American Citizenship."

Info

  • Time: 12:45 AM - 1:45 AM
  • Sponsor:

Dr. Arely Zimmerman interrogates the shifting boundaries of citizenship through the lense of Central American communities in the United States, a diaspora that has faced violent displacement from their countries of origin as well as legal and socio-political exclusions in the United States, and shows how their grassroots activism is redefining notions of membership and belonging in the context of their everyday struggles for rights, representation, and inclusion in multiple polities.

Refreshments will be served.
