GDR Photography: Between Documentary, Experimentation and Critique

Christina Cuevas-Wolf, PhD

Curator, The Wende Museum

This talk explores how photographers grappled with the realities of socialist life and the extent to which they could document it as they experienced it. To what extent could they follow their own creative impulses and to what extent did they need to follow the state's mandate for how Socialist society was meant to be viewed by the West and the rest of the communist world?

Lunch will be provided.
