A Talk by Dr. Walid A. Majid: Searching for Pulsars at the Center of the Galaxy
Dr. Walid A. Majid of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory will give a talk entitled "Searching for Pulsars at the Center of the Galaxy," presented by the 2013 Physics Seminar Series.
Pulsars are highly magnetized, rapidly rotating neutron stars that emit a beam of electromagnetic radiation that could be directed at Earth. Dr. Majid will discuss why it is important to search for pulsars in the center of the galaxy, and will give a summary of previous and ongoing efforts to survey the region with radio telescopes. He will also describe JPL's monitoring program using a newly refurbished Deen Space Network antenna, and will discuss the potential of future instruments that could detect hundreds of pulsars in the region.
