Courtney Davis - "Making Memories: Mathematics and Immune Memory"
The Department of Mathematics Presents Dr. Courtney Davis, Assistant Professor of Mathematics from the Natural Science Division of Pepperdine University and her talk "Making Memoires: Mathematics and Immune Memory."
My work uses mathematical models to investigate dynamics of immunity. I will discuss two biological questions and the mathematics that we have developed and used to address them. The first question arises from experimental evidence that the total number of memory T-cells is relatively constant between infections. This means, for instance, that some memory to past infections must be eliminated to make room for memory to new infections. I use Markov models and probabilistic calculations to examine memory longevity and to quantify how existing immunity changes as a result of new infections.
The second question I ask is what key aspects of the immune response should be targeted to create an effective vaccine against the bacteria Shigella. Shigella, a member of the same family as E. coli, causes 1.1 million deaths every year, mostly in children in developing countries. No vaccine exists for Shigella despite decades of research and clinical trials, in part because the multiple immune components responsible for conferring immunity against Shigella are not known. I will describe how I am using delay differential equation models to search for promising Shigella vaccine targets.
Refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome.

Colorado Boulevard Bike Lane Community Town Hall Meeting
Colorado Boulevard Bike Lane Community Town Hall Meeting
The Office of Councilmember Huizar, in partnership with the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council, The Eagle Rock Association, the Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce, and the Take Back the Boulevard initiative, invites you to a community meeting for the proposed bike lane on Colorado Boulevard. As part of the 2010 City of Los Angeles Bike Plan, the city identified streets throughout the city where bike lanes could possibly be installed. Colorado Bouelvard was chosen as one of the lanes to be studied first.
At the meeting, the Department of Transportation and Department of City Planning will discuss the proposed lanes and their impacts on the community. People are encouraged to attend so they can provide their input on the project to both departments.
For questions or to RSVP, please contact Councilmember Huizar's Northeast Office at (323) 254-5295 or email nate.hayward@lacity.org.
