Art, Sex, and Symbol: The Politics of Tattooed Women
Margot Mifflin '82 will deliver the Sixth Annual Charles Jensvold Lecture on "Art, Sex, and Symbol: The Politics of Tattooed Women."
Mifflin is an author, journalist and professor who writes about women, art, and contemporary culture. The author of Bodies of Subversion: A Secret History of Women and Tattoo and The Blue Tattoo: The Life of Olive Oatman, she has written for The New York Times, Salon.com, ARTNews, anbd Entertainment Weekly. An associate professor of English at Lehman College of the City University of New York, Mifflin also directs the Arts and Culture program at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.

Lisa Heldke - "Philosophers at Table"

Lisa Heldke is Professor of Philosophy at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, where she also teaches in the Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies Program. Her published works include the monograph Exotic Appeties: Ruminations of a Food Adventurer (Routledge), and coedited anthologies Cooking, Eating, Thinking: Transformative Philosophies of Food (Indiana); Oppression, Provelege and Resistance (MacMillan); and The Atkins Diet and Philosophy (Open Court). She is cofounder of Convivum: The Food and Philosophy Roundtable and co-creator of Philosophers on Holiday. She is co-editor of Food, Culture and Society: An International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research, and is on the editorial board of the Springer Encyclopedia of Food and Agriculture Ethics. Other present projects include a book co-authored with Raymond Boisvert, entitled Philosophers at Table.
A cofounder of a community garden in her own town, Heldke describes herself as "putting the 'community' in community gardening - that is, as opposed to the 'garden.'" In her fantasy life, she is a professional baker.
