The FAFSA is used to determine your eligibility for federal financial aid.
The FAFSA is the national application that all schools require to apply for financial aid. The FAFSA allows us to determine how much state and federal grants, loans, and work award you are eligible to receive. This application is free and available online at fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA is available starting January 1st.
We encourage you to use your best estimates (by referencing prior year taxes) when answering the questions on the FAFSA. Do not miss the deadline because you are waiting to file your federal tax returns.
Both you and your parent must have an individual Personal Identification Number (PIN) in order to log-in, sign, and submit your FAFSA. Unsigned FAFSA applications will be considered incomplete and may delay the review process.
Students who complete a FAFSA without completing the CSS PROFILE will only be considered for federal and state financial aid.
Avoid Common Errors
- The application must be signed by the student and one custodial parent whose information appears on the application.
- Double check that essential information is entered correctly (social security number, date of birth, name as it appears on a social security card).
- Answer all questions asked--errors occur when a question is skipped or left blank.
IRS Data Retrieval Tool
The FAFSA enables families to retrieve tax data directly from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to make completing the FAFSA more accurate. We encourage families to file their federal tax returns early in order to take advantage of this process. When you begin your FAFSA you will be prompted to retrieve tax data. Make sure you follow the steps on the FAFSA to import tax data onto your application. You will only be able to use this tool after the IRS has processed your and your parent(s) current year tax returns. For step-by-step instructions on how to use this tool, please reference our Verification Instructions*.
Selected for Verification?
After your FAFSA has been processed you will receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) via e-mail. Review your SAR for accuracy and check if you were selected for verification. If you were selected for verification by the Department of Education, you will need to submit additional forms to complete your file. We may request an IRS Tax Return Transcript for you (if you filed) and your parent(s), along with a Dependent* or Independent* Verification Worksheet.
