Federal tax returns and W-2s allow us to verify the information you reported on your FAFSA and CSS PROFILE.
Submit your and your parent(s) federal tax returns and W-2(s) by your deadline (different students have different deadlines) so we may finalize our review of your file and offer an official award letter. We require the entire federal tax return, including W-2s, 1099s, all schedules (A, B, C, D, E, F, K-1, etc.), and statements. A quick rule of thumb: if you sent it to the IRS, we want a copy too!
Not Filing Tax Returns?
If you or your parent(s) will not be filing a federal tax return, be sure to indicate this on your CSS PROFILE and FAFSA. Additional documentation may be requested.
Filing a Tax Return Extension?
If you or your parent(s) request an extension from the IRS, you must provide a copy of the extension request (Form 4868 Application for Automatic Extension), along with all current W-2 forms or K-1 statements by your tax deadline to secure your priority status. Failure to submit these documents on-time will jeopardize your aid eligibility.
We cannot provide an official financial aid award letter until we have copies of your and your parent(s) federal tax returns. If you or your parent(s) will not have your federal tax returns completed until after the start of the semester, you will have to make payment arrangements with the Student Business Services Office to be able to enroll.
Once you submit all the missing documents* listed of your award letter, we can verify the information you reported on your CSS PROFILE and/or FAFSA. If no other documents are required, your award will become official. Families may see some changes between their tentative award and their official award if the information from the tax return differs from what was reported on the aid applications. For this reason, we encourage you to submit tax returns and W-2s to our office before you make a decision to attend Occidental. This will allow us to provide you and your family with an official award before you make a commitment to the College.
