Occidental College
Global Affairs
The Chevalier Program in Diplomacy and World Affairs added a significant dimension in 2001 when Ambassador Derek Shearer, Chevalier Professor, recommended the establishment of the Office of Global Affairs as an integral part of Occidental’s program in Diplomacy and World Affairs and became its first director.
The Office of Global Affairs (GA) supports Occidental’s commitment to global literacy and offers a broad and unique set of opportunities to the Occidental community interested in international relations. This is facilitated by Ambassador Shearer’s wide range of contacts, many of whom have been named to the Global Affairs advisory board of nearly 50 prestigious scholars, government and political leaders, business executives, and individuals in the fine arts.
In addition to maintaining an active intellectual program, bringing leading authorities in international relations to campus to speak and meet informally with students and faculty, GA also organizes student and faculty conferences and symposia on global topics.
The Office of Global Affairs handles the college’s relations with the U.S.-based diplomatic corps and runs a number of on-campus educational programs. Working with the large Los Angeles-based diplomatic corps, GA brings diplomats to campus to speak and meet faculty and organizes joint events with consulates on and off campus.
