CDLR Faculty Fellows Program Launched
As part of the 2014 Mellon grant (“Developing Leadership in the Digital Liberal Arts”) (link above), fourteen Occidental faculty members over the course of the next three years will serve as faculty fellows associated with the Center for Digital Learning + Research. During these semester-long fellowships, the faculty fellows will have the opportunity to develop digital research projects and experiment with new pedagogical approaches. This work will be supported by a course release, funds for required equipment, and the collaborative labor of postdoctoral fellows affiliated with the CDLR. These fellowships are designed to essentially embed faculty members within the CDLR and foster collaboration among faculty fellows.
As part of their fellowship, faculty fellows will have the opportunity to develop and teach digital liberal arts lab courses. These labs will ideally provide students the opportunity to learn and apply new (and likely digital) scholarly methods in disciplinary contexts. The details of any individual course will need to go through the College’s course approval procedures, but the intention is that this program will result in the creation of low-unit labs that either extend existing courses or allow for the development of coursework not currently possible. These labs will be taught or team-taught by some combination of faculty fellows and the postdoctoral fellows affiliated with the CDL+R.
These programs will ramp up over the course of the four year grant cycle. For the 2014-2015 academic year, Allison DeFren, Kristi Upson-Saia, and Shanna Lorenz will serve as inaugural Faculty Fellows. Future years will feature two or three fellows per semester. Look out for announcements early in the fall for information sessions explaining how to apply for the next academic year, and feel free to contact Daniel Chamberlain (email@example.com) or either of the new postdoctoral fellows Patty Ahn (firstname.lastname@example.org) David Kim (email@example.com) at any time.
