Introducing Oxy’s Own Maker Space!
We are nearly finished spending the $70K grant from the Connell Foundation to launch a Critical Making Studio housed in the Academic Commons. Working in coordination with the Media, Arts, and Culture program, we have purchased four professional production kits (cameras, lenses, lights, audio recorders, and associated stands) and have configured five computers to serve as high-end post-production stations available to all students at the college.
Already, we have supported a DWA student completing a multimedia comprehensive project, the CatAList video production organization, and reporters for the Oxy Weekly. We also helped to launch Oxy’s Open Source club. In addition, we have ordered a robust suite of critical making equipment allowing students across many disciplines, and from multiple student organizations, to begin experimenting with physical computing equipment, 3D replicators, sensing devices, and autonomous aerial vehicles. In preparation for the fall semester we will be adding additional equipment to support audio production, preparing the equipment for regular lending, and planning a range of workshops and events.
All of this equipment is freely available to students, faculty, and staff to learn and use. Whether it’s an assignment for class, a personal project, research, or anything else - we can help supply equipment and skills.
We’re located at the bottom floor of the new wing of the library. Contact Daniel Chamberlain at (firstname.lastname@example.org) for more information.
