Independent Research

Occidental students awarded funds by the college for research or internships abroad during the winter, spring or summer breaks must thoroughly prepare for their independent abroad experience. Preparation before you go will ensure a safe, healthy and rewarding experience.

 

REQUIRED FORMS: Students who participate in research projects, community placements or project work abroad must file the following paperwork one month prior to departure. For exceptions on the deadline, please contact the International Programs. Please note: Placements facilitated by an Oxy professor and anytime there is OXY funding involved-even when the experiences are not for credit we require the documents listed below.

Travel Documents

Passport - You must have a valid passport for international travel and it must be valid 6 months after return from your sojourn. If your passport will expire before then, renew it immediately. http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

Health & Safety

College statements on Location Safety and Travel Policy.

 Immunizations - Print and read the health information and recommendations on the Centers for Disease Control (http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/) and the World Health Organization (http://www.who.int/en/) website to for your host country/region. Take the immunization recommendations of these experts seriously!

 Print and read the following documents for your country from the US Department of State (http://www.state.gov/) website:
 

  • Country Specific Information  
  • Worldwide Caution  
  • Travel Alert  

 Thoroughly review the US Department of State Travel information website for travel considerations, visa requirements and other important information about your destination. (http://www.state.gov/travel/)

 Find emergency medical facilities for your city by going to the US Embassy website of your country. U.S. embassies and consulates abroad maintain lists of hospitals and physicians. You can visit U.S. Embassy and Consulate web sites around the world at http://usembassy.state.gov/.]

 Make an emergency card to carry with you while abroad with the following information:

-Allergies and/or pre-existing conditions, 
-Health insurance company and travel phone number, 
-Travel services phone number for insurance.
-Nearest hospital address and phone number, 
-US Embassy/Consulate address and phone number, 
-Citizens Services address, phone emergency number ,


Know your health insurance!

Before you depart the US, telephone your health insurance provider to find out how to access benefits while abroad. Do they offer special services in an emergency abroad? How are they accessed? Can they help you find an English speaking doctor?

Buy and read a good guide book.
