Semester Abroad
Routes to Global Citizenship
Juniors who demonstrate appropriate preparation and scholarly purpose earn a semester's college credit toward the major, minor, core and electives while abroad. They test theories, concepts, and competencies encountered on campus in dynamic intercultural settings and set a course for global citizenship.
Advising
International Programs offers comprehensive advising. We guide the discernment process and assist in finding a program that addresses your goals and adheres to College policies. Together, we work with your academic advisor, the Registrar, and Financial Aid to ensure you are on-track for your degree and are maintaining a full-time student status while abroad. All students—no matter the program, no matter when (fall, spring, or summer)—are required to work with IPO for approval. Study Abroad Planning Worksheet.
First Steps
Plan ahead. Inform your academic advisor of your plans to study abroad. She/he will assist you in determining the courses you need for your degree requirements and the best time for you to be off campus.
Arm yourself with information. This is your experience. You owe it to yourself to do your research.
Internationalize your curriculum. Courses taken at Oxy with an international/global focus will prepare you to maximize your learning abroad.
Keep an open mind. Of the many programs available, you will need to identify a couple of programs that work best for your academic and personal needs and meet the College's standards.
A note of caution. Students who participate in study abroad programs independently during a leave of absence from the College are ineligible for College financial aid or scholarships and no credit will be transferred toward the Occidental degree.
