Summer/January abroad experiences are defined as independent experiences earning transfer credit by the Registrar and IPO guidelines... even if Oxy partners with a particular organization for semester study abroad.
What is the process to go abroad in Summer and/or Winter?
Step 1. Find your summer or January-term program abroad.
Step 2. Apply using appropriate online portals.
#1 Apply to your program provider application.
#2 Submit your Oxy Credit Transfer application before you go abroad. Once your course is approved and signed by IPO before you go abroad, you will receive a notification that it has been approved. Please note that there is a$28 processing fee for these forms.
- Deadline for January 2017 Abroad for Credit Transfer Form: December 9, 2016
- Deadline for Summer 2017 Abroad for Credit Transfer Form: April 7, 2017
Step 3. Prepare yourself to go abroad.
For summer and winter travel, is your own responsibility to verify with your medical professional that you are healthy enough to travel and any preparation you may need (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention). Similarly, you must determine that your destination is safe (US Department of State Travel). Always check with IPO and your program for advice. See College statements on Location Safety and Travel Policy.
How is Summer/Winter Abroad different from Semester Abroad?
Academic Credit: Courses you take abroad will be approved for transfer credit only, not letter grades as in Semester Abroad.
Independent Application Process: You do not need a separate IPO approval to go abroad for Summer/Winter term, unless the provider asks for one. These requests for approval are usually sent through email to IPO which are generally approved. However you must complete the Oxy Summer/January For Credit form in order to obtain credits for the courses you take abroad.
Payment Process: Once approved, you pay relevant program fees directly to your study abroad provider, not Occidental College as it is the case for Semester Abroad.
