Occidental College
Media Arts & Culture
Grants & Fellowships
Making a documentary can sometimes get hairy.
There are a number of exciting opportunities for Media Arts and Culture students to apply for grants, fellowships, and research/media project support art the intermediate and advanced levels.
Complete details and comprehensive listings are available through the Undergraduate Research Center. Listed below are a few sample programs our majorers have taken advantage of to exciting result.
Students in Advanced Level or Senior Comprehensives courses may apply for project or travel support funds through the college’s ASP Grant programs. Please contact the Undergraduate Research Council Office for applications and specific deadlines for the fall and spring semester granting cycles.
RICHTER GRANTS
For students who have developed research or media projects requiring travel, it is possible to apply for substantive travel fund support through the Richter Grant program. These applications are not last-minute affairs. Projects should be developed and rarified well in advance of deadlines in coordination with a faculty advisor.
SUMMER SPONSORED RESEARCH
The objectives of the summer research program at Occidental are to:
–Sponsor faculty/student collaborative research
–Provide an academic alternative to nonacademic summer jobs
–Increase students’ preparation for leadership roles in professions and/or public service
–Create an intellectual community, with opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange
–Enrich the academic experience of our most capable and promising students
–Encourage good students, especially students from under-represented groups, to consider careers in the scholarly professions
If you can devise a summer research of production project in conjunction with a faculty mentor that engages with these endeavors, this is a wonderful opportunity to receive summer funding and campus housing.
NATIONAL AWARDS, FELLOWSHIPS, AND SCHOLARSHIPS
Be sure to talk early on in your Occidental career and frequently throughout it with your faculty advisor about possible national awards or post-graduate fellowships for which you might be a strong candidate. Some of these permit project-driven post-graduate research or travel. Others provide funding for graduate study. Others still are simply merit-based awards, some are focused on fostering minority groups, and many reward service and leadership.
