Music industry and innovative conservatory training in an urban liberal arts setting.
Occidental, as the only liberal arts college in the heart of Los Angeles, gives our students unparalleled access to the world’s most vibrant musical scene, where some of the most exciting and diverse music is being made today. At Oxy, you will work side by side with our faculty of world-class musicians and scholars to explore, experiment, create, and communicate.
Do you want to write a song and a symphony? No problem. Take a class in music production and be an Oxy intern at one of the world’s leading record labels? Sure. Star in your friend’s film and also write the music for it? Done. Do you want to play bass in the Jazz Ensemble and our resident orchestra, the Sinfonia? Step in line. Do you want to sing in our famous Glee Club and have the lead in the main stage musical? Do you know how much Bach and jazz have in common? Have you ever wanted to play traditional Mexican instruments and study techno-cumbia, while taking a class in music and immigration? Or recreate an 18th-century banquet in a course on music and food?
You can do all of this. Let us be your laboratory.
The Fall 2016 Music Theory Placement Exam will be given on Monday, August 29, 2016 at 2:00-3:00 p.m. in Booth Hall 204. Studying music theory is fundamental to all music-making because it enables you to understand how and why the music you love sounds the way it does. So regardless of what kind of music interests you, we urge that one of the first courses you take at Oxy be a music theory course. The Music Theory Placement Exam will indicate which course to take.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic will be playing Bounce, a ballet for children composed by our Assistant Professor of Composition, Adam Schoenberg, on September 8 at the Hollywood Bowl. The concert features live dance (a collaboration with BODYTRAFFIC), and the program ends with Stravinsky's masterpiece, The Rite of Spring. Find out more information about the concert here. Read more about Adam here: adamschoenberg.com.
We are pleased to announce our first Benjamin H. Culley Teaching Artist in Residence, Lyndon Johnston Taylor, who has joined the Music faculty this academic year. Currently Principal Second Violinist for the LA Philharmonic, Lyndon brings to Oxy a wealth of outstanding performing and teaching experience. Find out more about Lyndon here.
