Sinfonia and Chamber Ensembles
Instrumentalists develop as musicians by playing in both large and small ensembles. Sinfonia and Chamber Ensembles is designed to provide both experiences in one course.
Sinfonia is Occidental's orchestral ensemble, and chamber ensembles will be carved out of it, according to student skill and interest. Both Sinfonia and its chamber ensembles focus on the standard repertoire from the Baroque through the present. The mission of this course is to provide a rigorous learning environment that will expose students to an eclectic range of music. Through its close collaboration with the Composition program, this course will emulate the music industry, with students participating in reading workshops, original film scoring projects, and recording sessions, as well as premiering new compositions throughout the academic year. In the spring semester, the Sinfonia will collaborate with the Glee Club and College Chorus to perform a significant choral work with orchestral accompaniment. Chamber ensembles will receive weekly coaching from the appropriate applied music faculty members. Prerequisite: an audition with the Director of Instrumental Activities and the principal chamber ensemble coaches.
