Fellowships, Scholarships and National Awards
 

First Year

  • If you are interested in international graduate study, begin taking language courses
  • Find internship and research opportunities for during school and the summer
  • Get involved in campus life (athletics, student government, newspaper, clubs, orgs, etc)
  • Get to know your academic advisor along with other faculty
  • Make getting involved in off-campus volunteer activities, service organizations, or other programs an important part of you college and educational experience
  • Start to clarify your academic, career and personal goals
  • Make it a priority to start off with an excellent grade point average
  • Some awards (Boren, Goldwater, Pickering, Udall) you are eligible to apply for as a sophomore; research these if they are within your interests
  • Start creating a resume/CV
  • Consider keeping a journal to document your goals, aspirations and personal experiences


Sophomore Year

  • Select a major; take courses that complement your major and seek out interdisciplinary studies
  • Continue to get to know your professors and let them know about your interest in national awards
  • Sophomore year is the ideal time to plan for study abroad; research countries that would support your academic interest; choose a rigorous program—perhaps one that allows for an independent research project or internship or that emphasizes intensive language study
  • If you are interested in international study after graduation (Fulbright, Boren, Luce, Rotary), spend your sophomore year in in-depth language study
  • Most national awards reward students for participating in independent, original research/projects; look for research funding opportunities
  • Look for internships that will complement your academic goals
  • Continue to participate in co-curricular activities that reflect your personal passions/drive; take on leadership roles and take initiative within these activities
  • Continue to maintain a high level of academic achievement throughout this year
  • Prepare for applications due in the junior year (refer to list; there are several); begin contacting faculty advisors about application procedures


Junior Year

  • Continue to broaden your studies and outline your career goals
  • Begin to narrow your focus on awards to which you want to apply for the Senior Year
  • If you are interested in graduate study in the US, meet with your faculty advisor and mentors
  • Approach faculty for letters of recommendation
  • Begin to consider your main academic and professional interests
  • Take time to consider all of the available awards for Juniors, Seniors, and Grads
  • Consult with the Office of Fellowships Advising to begin the process of applying; request an appointment
  • Attend workshops for personal statements, proposals, and award informational meetings
  • Expand your leadership potential during this year; continue to participate in co-curricular activities
  • Study abroad (if applicable) and/or deepen your language study
  • Take challenging coursework during this year while maintaining a high GPA


Senior Year (in some cases, post-grad)

  • Take the “Honors” option if applicable/possible in your major for your senior thesis
  • Maintain a high level of excellence in your coursework
  • Finalize your essays, proposals, CV/Resume, application forms, letters of recommendation
  • Prepare and submit your applications (MEET ALL DEADLINES)
  • Participate in mock interviews
  • Receive Award notification
